Learn More About PLTW Gateway!

In 1996, my boss at the time, Dick Blais, left the district to work on getting PLTW off the ground. He had put together a very powerful advisory council that met frequently and helped raise the initial funding for PLTW, which got its start in 1997. Students play the role of real-life medical detectives as they collect and analyze medical data to diagnose disease. They solve medical mysteries through hands-on projects and labs, measure and interpret vital signs, examine nervous system structure and function, and investigate disease outbreaks. Our programs are designed to empower students to thrive in an evolving world.

Experience PLTW

Students are technology trailblazers who are empowered through transportable skills and prepared to start any career. Furthermore, when I was a Master Teacher, I got to meet many great educators from around the country and received great feedback after summer training was over. I have had several PLTW Professional Development participants tell me that they were about to leave teaching, but PLTW was changing their minds.

An Evidence-based Solution for Middle School Students

Each PLTW Engineering course engages students in interdisciplinary activities like working with a client to design a home, programming electronic devices or robotic arms, or exploring algae as a biofuel source. These activities not only build knowledge and skills in engineering, but also empower students to develop essential skills such as problem solving, critical and creative thinking, communication, collaboration, and perseverance. The first version of the IED curriculum was well done but light in content, and we all found that we needed more goodies in it.

pltw engineering design process

Students learn how these concepts apply to a career in aerospace engineering and other engineering fields. The knowledge and skills students acquire throughout PLTW Engineering come together in EDD as they identify an issue and then research, design, and test a solution, ultimately presenting their solution to a panel of engineers. Students apply the professional skills they have developed to document a design process to standards, completing EDD ready to take on any post-secondary program or career. Students are given the opportunity to combine mechanisms with input and output devices to automate the mechanisms. Construction and programming skills are layered, and projects and the problem provide students the opportunity to connect their learning throughout the lessons in the unit. Students take on the role of interns, and work in teams to identify design requirements and create prototypes to meet the needs of clients.

Unlocking Real-World Skills for All Students

It worked great – we were able to keep in touch and share our experiences. In addition, there were several members of the group who took leadership roles and ended up being the first Master Teachers in IED. In the early ‘90s, before PLTW officially formed, teachers at my school taught early versions of IED, Principles of Engineering (POE), and Digital Electronics (DE).

Why hands-on, real-world learning?

Many students have come back after college and thanked me for turning them on to a successful career in engineering. They will usually also bring up a favorite PLTW project from our class time together. Terry C. Nagy Jr. is a longtime teacher at Shenendehowa High School, located in the New York school district where the first PLTW courses were developed two decades ago.

Students will customize their experience by choosing a problem that interests them from the areas of health, environment, emergency preparedness, education, community service, and school culture. Because problems in the real world involve more than one discipline, the unit will introduce students to biomedical science concepts as they work on solutions for the specific problems they choose to tackle. Students engage in an open-ended research experience in the PLTW Capstone course, a culminating program for those completing PLTW's high school offerings. They collaborate in teams, designing and developing original solutions to well-defined and justified real-world problems. Students explore the foundations of computing by engaging in circuit design processes to create combinational logic and sequential logic (memory) as electrical engineers do in industry. Students discover and explore manufacturing processes, product design, robotics, and automation, and then they apply what they have learned to design solutions for real-world manufacturing problems.

Using the Design Process for Engineering Partnerships

In PLTW Engineering, students engage in open-ended problem solving, learn and apply the engineering design process, and use the same industry-leading technology and software as are used in the world’s top companies. Students dig deep into the engineering design process, applying math, science, and engineering standards to hands-on projects. They work both individually and in teams to design solutions to a variety of problems using 3D modeling software, and use an engineering notebook to document their work. This course propels students’ learning in the fundamentals of atmospheric and space flight. As they explore the physics of flight, students bring the concepts to life by designing an airfoil, propulsion system, and rockets.

They solve real-world aviation and space challenges and plan a mission to Mars. To ensure that more middle school students have equal access and opportunities to engage and be empowered through the PLTW experience, we offer all PLTW Gateway units and teacher resources in both English and Spanish. PLTW Core Training immerses teachers in a hands-on, collaborative learning environment, challenges them to look at their classrooms in a new way, and empowers them to bring learning to life with PLTW. Physical computing projects will promote student awareness of interactive systems, including Internet of Things (IoT) devices, and broaden their understanding of abstract computer science concepts through meaningful and authentic applications. Students discover the design process and develop an understanding of the influence of creativity and innovation in their lives.

They also explore robot systems through projects such as remotely operated vehicles. Students explore the physics of flight and space through software simulations and hands-on experiences. They bring concepts to life by designing and testing an airfoil, propulsion system, and a rocket.

Students explore how modern engineers help improve the world through diverse engineering fields, such as product design, mechanical design, infrastructure, and sustainability. Students learn and use some of the cutting edge tools engineers use in robotics, 3D modeling, programming, and prototyping. Manufactured items are part of everyday life, yet most students have not been introduced to the high-tech, innovative nature of modern manufacturing. This course illuminates the opportunities related to understanding manufacturing. At the same time, it teaches students about manufacturing processes, product design, robotics, and automation. Students can earn a virtual manufacturing badge recognized by the National Manufacturing Badge system.

It’s been amazing to see this giant, successful program continue to grow and improve, knowing I was one of the original pieces of the puzzle. The PLTW Participation Fee is invoiced annually and does not increase with added units or program expansion.

They also explore different aspects of automation and robotics, and experience how solving real-life problems involves the teamwork of mechanical engineers, software developers, and electrical engineers. Students learn important aspects of building and site design and development. They apply math, science, and standard engineering practices to design both residential and commercial projects and document their work using 3D architecture design software.

PLTW Engineering students adopt a problem-solving mindset, are engaged in compelling, real-world challenges that help them become better collaborators and thinkers, and are prepared with skills to step into any career path they take. I hope you received some ideas to help you as you make your way through the process of developing partnerships. Business partnerships are a key way to increase your PLTW program’s funding as well as provide students a way to interact with companies. Students are engaged in compelling, real-world challenges and are prepared with skills to step into any career path they take. PLTW Launch taps into students’ exploratory nature, engages them in learning that feels like play, and encourages them to keep discovering. Students at Dakota Meadows Middle School in Mankato, Minnesota, have been working diligently to design, build, test, document, and share puzzle cubes in Michael Schuldt’s classroom.

Waffle House is not the only business whose operations are measured to determine natural disaster impact, and FEMA does not formally use Waffle House closures to assess the scope of disasters. FEMA assesses the impact of natural disasters by measuring their interruption of multiple large national chains and informally references a "Waffle House Index." Waffle House responded to several other disasters this year before Irene hit. After a series of deadly tornadoes tore through Alabama and Georgia in late April, one restaurant was destroyed and another 20 were without power.

How to Measure a Storm’s Fury One Breakfast at a Time

The chain’s locations would normally stay open even in severe conditions to help first responders. The well-known restaurant chain currently has 10 locations closed in the hardest hit areas of Florida, a number that will "fluctuate rapidly" as staff works to re-open and aid community members, Waffle House spokesperson Njeri Boss tells CNBC Make It. Fugate and his crew determined that if you got to the interstate and the Waffle House was up and running, it's most likely not the most impacted area. "Well, my guys slipped in an image about the Waffle House Index," Fugate said. "By now, we had figured out where the Waffle Houses were closed, which had no power or limited menus, and which ones were open. If they weren't closed and had a full menu, you were moving well into recovery operations and it was much more stable."

Here's how the 'Waffle House Index' measures a hurricane's potential impact

In a time of natural disaster, the federal government uses a simple gauge to determine the toll Mother Nature has taken on a local area. Compounding FEMA's public relations challenge is the fact that FEMA only tends to be involved in times of great distress. For Americans to require FEMA's help, whatever happened on the ground must have been quite severe.

As a precaution, the business preemptively closed three store in Idalia's path (Live Oak, Madison, Lake City), Boss said. Matthew Ray Booth, who lives a few miles away, came in at 4 p.m. He said he had spent two days drinking soda and eating canned pork and beans. He ordered bacon, scrambled eggs with cheese, hash browns “scattered, covered and smothered,” and a glass of iced tea. “We didn’t have no air, and no place to cook no food at the house,” said the 69-year-old.

In fact, a measurement tool called the Waffle House Index can be used to analyze a storm’s severity and the effect it can have on communities. Its classifications of green, yellow, and red indicate how severe a storm is based on how well Waffle House can operate during it. The term was coined by former FEMA administrator Craig Fugate following the Joplin tornado in May 2011. The storm, which caused over $2.8 billion in damage and 158 casualties, was not enough to close down either of the Waffle House locations in Joplin. The breakfast chain remained open throughout the storm, with a prepared limited menu that allowed it to serve food even during power outages.

All of this support is important, particularly as businesses strive to open after disasters. This will be the first time the chain restaurant is expanding south of Anaheim. The Columbia University Board of Trustees released a statement Wednesday saying they strongly support President Minouche Shafik, who has faced calls for her resignation amid intense pressure to rein in days-long protests.

The Number of Waffle Houses in Every State

CT, 34 arrests have been made by law enforcement on the UT Austin campus, according to an X post from the Texas Department of Public Safety. The board said it is "urgently working" with Shafik to resolve the unrest on campus and "rebuild the bonds of our community." In an evening update, the Texas Department of Public Safety said that 34 arrests had been made by law enforcement on the campus as of 9 p.m. Graffiti described as “hateful” has been painted on campus, the officials said. Other buildings on the campus in Arcata are at risk of being occupied, and protesters “have shown a willingness” to lock themselves in facilities and steal equipment, the officials said. Student reactions to calls for the college president's resignation have been mixed, Karam said.

It says its strategy is more about marketing and building goodwill than profits. Waffle House, a privately held company based in suburban Atlanta, may be best known as a roadside stop for retirees driving south or the place where musician Kid Rock got into a brawl after a 2007 concert. WELDON, N.C.—When a hurricane makes landfall, the head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency relies on a couple of metrics to assess its destructive power. Yes, the government really does use the Waffle House Index, though not necessarily in an official capacity.

When news that a hurricane impacting the U.S. is imminent, a small team of Waffle House employees is already gearing up preparations at its headquarters just outside Atlanta. Prior to joining Newsweek in 2018, Ramsey was a multimedia reporter at the local NPR and PBS affiliate WUFT News in Gainesville, Florida. While there, he reported for TV, radio and web, primarily focusing on local and state politics.

More natural disasters, including three additional hurricanes that directly hit Florida that year, forced Fugate and his team to travel the state. There was one indicator that came back time and time again that best represented where the worst storm damage was located after a major weather event. "The one thing that was true for almost any disaster was if there was anything open or got open first, it was a Waffle House," Fugate said.

The overhead lights and walk-in freezer weren’t working, but the gas grill was. The cooks boiled water on the grill, then poured it through the coffee machine, over beans ground before the power went out. The district manager, Chris Barnes, handed employees copies of an emergency grill-only menu. The fare included ham-and-egg sandwiches for $3.15 and quarter-pound hamburgers for $2.70.

According to several media reports the index ranges from green, to yellow, to red. Yellow means the restaurants are on a limited menu and lack resources. "They are open most of the time. And that was the index. If a Waffle House is closed because there's a disaster, it's bad. We call it red. If they're open but have a limited menu, that's yellow," he said. "If they're green, we're good, keep going. You haven't found the bad stuff yet." But that "always faithful, always there for you" restaurant chain that Anthony Bourdain admired so much was ready to serve the community.

Yesterday, EHS Today, a magazine for environment, health and safety leaders, explained that major companies such as The Home Depot, Walmart, and Waffle House serve as role models in disaster preparedness. These companies have good risk management plans to ensure that their stores continue to operate when a disaster strikes, and also provide basic supplies to people in their community. An important element is limiting the menu so the company’s supply chain can focus on keeping certain items stocked and chilled or frozen.

Some hurricane watchers measure the storm with the Waffle House Index

waffle house index

Over the years there have been several news articles to come out about a little something called the “Waffle House Index.” This index is pretty ingenious—it relies on the open or closed status of the well-known diner chain in disaster-affected areas. In 2022, because of the expected severity of Hurricane Ian, 35 Waffle Houses closed in Florida prior to the storm's arrival, an extremely rare event. Hurricane Ian eventually made landfall as a Category 4 hurricane with winds of 155 miles per hour (249 km/h), peaking out over the Atlantic Ocean as a Category 5 hurricane. "The delays are behind us and we are moving full steam ahead to complete the new restaurant in San Diego, shooting for a late-summer, early-fall opening," Sam White, financial and business advisor for Roscoe's House of Chicken and Waffles told NBC 7.

After a hurricane, the 24/7 restaurant provides one measure of how infrastructure and supply chains are holding up.

One story that is particularly uplifting is the exchange between chains Publix (from Florida) and H-E-B (from Texas) in that they have provided mutual support—Publix helped raise money for the Red Cross after Harvey and H-E-B sent supplies to Florida after Irma. Mr. Cato, 38, is still making his own music when he’s not onstage revving up the “Late Show” crowd. "He's [Herb] like, 'This is going to be the place for it.' And it's right outside of downtown. So we felt it would be a great location," Diane Vara, then Creative Director for Roscoe's House of Chicken ‘N Waffles told NBC 7 in 2022. Barrio Logan was chosen as a location by owner Herb Hudson, who toured various areas in San Diego including North Park. A GoFundMe has been set up in support of the family of the 74-year-old security guard, Rosalind, who was shot while working at the Waffle House.

How FEMA uses Waffle Houses in disasters

As [FEMA Director W. Craig Fugate] often says, the Waffle House test doesn’t just tell us how quickly a business might rebound – it also tells us how the larger community is faring. The sooner restaurants, grocery and corner stores, or banks can re-open, the sooner local economies will start generating revenue again – signaling a stronger recovery for that community. The success of the private sector in preparing for and weathering disasters is essential to a community’s ability to recover in the long run. As Craig [Fugate] often says, the Waffle House test doesn’t just tell us how quickly a business might rebound – it also tells us how the larger community is faring. Open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, Waffle House is famed for more than just its all-day breakfast.

"Waffle House gets open, while everyone else has to wait for the infrastructure to allow them to reopen." Fugate has stated publicly that the Waffle House Index has been used internally at FEMA to help the agency determine which areas need more disaster relief services. For people, the Waffle House Index is more than eggs and pancakes, it’s a slice of normalcy and a comforting sign of hope. "If you get there and the Waffle House is closed?" Fugate wrote in a blog post. "We wanted to get something to eat because the day would be packed and didn't know when we'd get to eat again," said Fugate, describing their search for breakfast one morning after the storm.

He also investigated county animal shelters' euthanization rates and the struggles Florida felons face when re-entering society, stories that won a regional Hearst and Murrow award, respectively. In 2017, Ramsey was a USA Today College correspondent, where he reported on higher education news. "They were making coffee by pouring bottled water into the coffee maker, and they were serving breakfast with plastic plates and utensils because they couldn't wash anything," Fugate recalled.

Does FEMA Use Waffle House Closures to Determine How Bad a Disaster Is?

He used it as a way of knowing how serious damage may be in a region, based on how many Waffle House locations were still open and serving after a storm. With Waffle House's reputation for staying open during severe weather, even FEMA uses the 'Waffle House Index' to measure the severity of a storm. “We think about, What are the timelines in which people have to be provided medications? ” Greg Burel, the stockpile’s director, told me. “Our primary stock is laid down in undisclosed locations around the country that give us access to large swaths of the population and that are accessible” by more than one type of transportation. Waffle House uses one main distributor, Illinois-based US Foods, which has depots scattered across the Southeast, where most Waffle Houses are concentrated, and where many hurricanes that strike the U.S. make landfall. So supplies don’t need to travel far in advance of a storm and are close by once roads are clear.

Anytime a hurricane heads to a location Waffle House serves, the company’s crisis response team springs into action, working with employees before the storm and helping them get back to work, if they can, after the disaster. The historic high-end Category 3 hurricane drove a "catastrophic" storm surge and birthed flooding for hundreds of miles before powering into the southern Georgia border around 11 a.m. Fugate remembered responding to a deadly tornado that had torn through Joplin, Missouri, in 2011.

People have opened their homes and their hearts to their fellow Americans in ways that are nothing short of absolutely inspiring. And of course, this is merely a snapshot of just some of the outstanding work that’s being done to help hurricane survivors across the southern parts of the country. More work is still being done and the outpouring of support continues.

The last shots fired call was in 2021, and shots were fired in 2020 as well. Campus police announced earlier that anyone who stayed in the area would be subject to criminal trespass laws. The Los Angeles Police Department arrested approximately 50 protestors at the University of Southern California after campus police gave a dispersal order to demonstrators, according to a CNN crew at the scene.

Many of the supplies needed wouldn’t be able to get there without the help of private sector partners like FedEx which is working with several non-profits to help provide transportation support. For small towns, places like coffee shops and local restaurants are often the local hubs of activity. Just a cup of coffee, a bite to eat, or the chance to catch up with a neighbor can mean a lot to someone who may have lost everything.

It is an indicator of how complex and long supply chains are — for food, for fuel, for power — and of what it takes to plan around infrastructure that can be fragile in unexpected ways. Out in the Atlantic Ocean, Hurricane Matthew was hurling winds of 115 miles an hour toward the coast of Florida. Hundreds of miles inland, in the headquarters of Waffle House Inc., Stark’s software predicted that 477 of the chain’s almost 1,900 restaurants might be affected by the onrushing storm. Just ahead of Hurricane Idalia slamming into Florida's Big Bend Wednesday near Keaton Beach, five Waffle House restaurants were closed, Waffle House Vice President of Public Relations Njeri Boss told USA TODAY.

Choosing the Right Materials

On the other hand, if you’re designing a bathroom for a fast-paced restaurant, you’ll want to make sure it gives off the appearance of cleanliness and neatness. Injecting bright, bold hues into a commercial bathroom energizes the space and creates a memorable visual impact. Strategic use of vibrant colors on a single wall or as accent pieces can make the room appear larger and more inviting. Graffiti mural artwork infuses a vibrant, urban edge into commercial bathroom spaces, creating an unexpected visual focal point. This dynamic wall treatment reflects a brand’s creativity and can enhance the customer’s experience with unique, artistic flair.

A Neutral Color Scheme

And if your building’s interior design features bold colors and fun aesthetics, make sure your bathroom doesn’t feel cold and out of place. Commercial bathrooms have come a long way from being merely utilitarian to now incorporating commercial bathroom design and trends that have a sense of style and pride within a facility. It makes a difference for occupants when the restroom is of a higher quality when it comes to appearance and design. Stylized vanities are all about luxury and sophistication, and a custom unit may be exactly what your commercial bathroom design is missing. Using classy materials like marble or quartz and incorporating unique design elements like custom sinks and faucets can elevate the look of the entire room.

Unique Tilework

Classic Subway Tiles

Our in-home consultations, high-end product selections, fast demos, and professional installation will take you from design to done in no time—and with no stress. A design-build contractor has designers and builders fully integrated into one team. When you choose design-build services, you work with one team throughout the entire remodeling process. The impact that bathroom accessories and fixtures have on the overall appeal of a commercial bathroom can’t be underrated.

Ultimately, a well-executed commercial bathroom remodel is in the hands of the contractor you choose to complete the job. When you’re investing time and money into a big project like a commercial restroom renovation, you need to ensure that you choose a high-quality contractor with plenty of proven experience. In addition to a clean and functional space, consumers want public restrooms to be modern in design, with quality finishes and products. Similarly, owners want their bathrooms to be an extension of their spaces’ aesthetic that provides their consumers with an inviting space. With coming into contact with germs at the forefront of everyone’s minds, minimizing the number of contact surfaces is becoming the standard for commercial bathroom design.

This stylistic and thematic approach to bathroom design has garnished a great deal of attention and praise. Cultivating a confident sense of solitude should be the first and last step in your commercial bathroom design overhaul. Another popular commercial bathroom design trend is the incorporation of touchless fixtures. Let’s take a closer look at commercial bathroom design and how you can improve your facilities and customer experience. Plants, mirrors, candles and plenty of other subtle accents can go a long way toward refreshing a commercial bathroom space, especially in a modern design. Use the color schemes and materials that suit the contemporary aesthetic and the specific style you want, then add them where you have space in your commercial bathroom. Many features of a commercial bathroom, such as the partitions, already incorporate sleek lines, which helps create the foundation and inspiration for a modern commercial bathroom.

But if you’re remodeling an existing bathroom, you’ll want to consider whether replacing older toilets or sinks is worth it in the long run. In some cases, paying a little more for water-conserving toilets or sinks will bring in a better ROI. Subway tiles bring a timeless appeal to commercial bathrooms, offering both durability and a clean, classic aesthetic.

As a result, sensor-enabled tapware and soap dispensers have become more important than ever. A neutral color scheme is a great way to make a smaller bathroom feel larger if you go with a whiter and brighter look. Alternatively, you can get a dramatic, high-end design if you go more on the darker, blacker side. If you prefer a slightly natural look with the contemporary style, use dark or ash gray wood tones to bring a clean, yet warm, feel.

Incorporating mixed metal fixtures adds a sophisticated and contemporary touch to a commercial bathroom. This design choice creates visual interest and breaks the monotony without overwhelming a compact space. Vivid wallpaper with large, striking patterns can transform a mundane bathroom into a dynamic focal point. Such wallpaper serves as an instant conversation starter and infuses personality into the space. It also visually enlarges the area, making it perfect for smaller commercial bathrooms seeking a dramatic flair. A mosaic detailed wall acts as a captivating focal point, instantly elevating the visual interest of a small commercial bathroom.

This is especially important because there's a push toward integrating monitoring technologies into building-wide platforms that can offer staff a full readout in one place. There's also a growing recognition that privacy is an important part of accessibility. The idea is to make sure that anyone who uses the restrooms can have dignity and security.

Does The Marshall House, Historic Inns of Savannah Collection have a restaurant on site?

It was beautiful insideWe loved the breakfast every day we stayed hereThis is a wonderful place to stay at.. I’ve been coming to The Marshall House since 1999. I bring friends and family and coworkers to share the amazing experience and the historic location. The rooms have great decor, and the breakfast is the best in Savannah." Located on famous Broughton Street, The Marshall House is walking distance from most of Savannah’s major tourist attractions. Just a few blocks from the Riverfront, it is surrounded by great restaurants, shops and entertainment venues.

We liked the spacious one bedroom suite with view to an internal court where breakfast was served. Classical ambience with luxury details. Historic hotel with good and comfortble reception. Bottles of water, coffee and tea were complimentary, as well as a drink every evening. Central location and historical significance. Loved the wine and cheese evenings with quiz or live music.

This hotel was highly rated for its very comfy beds. It's a lovely hotel and the service was great. If you booked through us and want to leave a review, please sign in first.

It's a mix of modern and vintage, past and present, featuring everything from original 1850s doors and moulding to contemporary furniture and present-day amenities. The Marshall House offers three suites and 65 guest rooms, ranging from our Petite Queen Rooms to the unique and spacious Mary Marshall Suite on the balcony. The Marshall House in Savannah is one of the most fascinating hotels in the city. This stunning Historic District hotel has everything you need for a relaxing and comfortable stay. Next time you need a place to stay, be sure to book a room at the Marshall House.

Staff assisted with printing out boarding pass. This aging gem was opened in 1851 by enterprising innkeeper Mary Marshall, making it the city’s oldest hotel. In the Civil War it served as a hospital, while Joel Chandler Harris, author of the famous “Uncle Remus” stories (of Br’er Rabbit and company), lived here in the late 1860s. If you can afford it, the Broughton Balcony Rooms are the best in the hotel and a real treat, opening out onto the spacious, wrought-iron veranda. Surrounded by restaurants and shopping, short walk to City Market and Riverwalk. I like the idea of staying in a historical bldg, and I would’ve loved to hear the history of it.

Guest can expect their hotel to be one of the stops on some of the ghost tours that travel around Savannah's multiple ghostly stops. If you're looking for a hotel that is haunted, without the extremely haunted feel and look, this is the place. One could easily book this hotel without their family members realizing it's haunted.

In response to the coronavirus (COVID-19), additional safety and sanitation measures are in effect at this property. Guests under 21 years old can only check in with a parent or official guardian. This hotel was highly-rated for its very comfy beds.

Some guests have reported seeing friendly ghosts at the Marshall House. Our star system does not denote hotel amenities but it does denote the level of our approval. A place with one star is worth a look—after all, it made the list. A rating of two stars means it's excellent, and three stars is the highest praise we give.

Wonderful location, easy walking distance to downtown shops and restaurants. Nice little room, wonderful staff, excellent breakfast. Nice happy hour with wine and cheese along with a harpist. Did not use valet parking....public parking garage 1/2 block away.

Breakfast was delicious and the location was close to everything. Use the Next and Previous buttons to navigate. Our Accessible King Rooms closely resemble our Classic King guest rooms, but with accessible bathroom features and details.

Stay in the know

Everything was spotless and in great repair. The location is perfect for exploring the historical district. Loved the location, the friendliness of the staff, the comfort of the parlour area and the wine and nibbles reception with entertainment. The waiter serving at this was so nice and welcoming, a credit to the hotel, he was a gentleman. Bedroom was so comfy and immaculately clean. Fun, quirky, and a little bit different, the guest rooms at The Marshall House have a unique style that you just won't find in a new hotel.

Amenities

In the oldest city in Georgia, you are bound to hear a surplus of ghost stories. In Savannah, it seems every location has a unique set of ghost stories. The Marshall House is home to quite a few. These spirits are some of Savannah’s friendliest ghosts. Guests of the hotel have said to have heard ghostly children playing and running down the halls late at night as well as faucets turning on by themselves.

In the heart of the Historic District, within walking distance of most major attractions

The hotel was beautiful and very clean. The nightly wine and cheese hours with entertainment were terrific. We liked the fact that there was always complimentary cold bottles of water and a coffee and tea station in the lobby. Built in 1851, this charming 68-room property housed Union soldiers during the Civil War -- and some guests say their spirits still walk the hallways. However, this upper-middle-range property has some of the drawbacks common to old buildings, such as noise issues, small rooms and bathrooms, and few amenities.

Fun Historic Facts

Plesant stay at a nice central hotel. No free parking but some options around. Everything you need in the Room only downside is you hear as people Talk in the walkway ... With a prime location on Broughton Street, you'll be near everything you want to see and do.

There’s a small museum inside the hotel. We're staying at the Marshall house right now. Specially, Dona and our new favorite Cary this will be the second time I booked From ... The Historic District is bordered by the Savannah River and Forsyth Park, and includes the Riverfront and City Market areas. Riverfront is a (somewhat) recently revitalized area, with restaurants, galleries, shops, and bars.

The Marshall House’s original owner was a prominent Savannah woman. Mary M. Marshall opened the original Marshall House in 1851, and she was known as an incredibly successful businesswoman in Savannah’s elite financial and social circles. Today, there’s an 1830s portrait of Mary in the reception area welcoming guests to her hotel. On the hotel's third floor, you'll find a collection of historic artifacts from the original Marshall House.

Don’t miss the 45 Bistro, which offers a seasonal menu and an extensive wine list. We loved the daily free musical entertainment and happy hour. There was lots of choice and no limits on quantity. The staff were friendly and accommodating.

There's shopping and dining right outside our door, and beautiful squares and antebellum architecture at every turn. Most guests do not need their car until it's time to leave. Based on reviews, other golfers are saying that the course conditions at The Landings Club - Marshwood Course are excellent.

I've stayed here several times and it's always pleasant and clean. The breakfast is always phenomenal and no other hotel compares. The Marshall House in Savannah is known for its gorgeous architecture, stunning wrought iron, romantic atmosphere and elegant rooms that overlook popular Broughton Street. But there’s way more to The Marshall House than its beauty! Check out these fun facts that make The Marshall House a sought-after destination for history lovers.

City Market is a more diverse and casual version of Riverfront, with lots of live music and vendors selling locally made wares. Afternoon wine and entertainment nice touch. The conditions, like all the courses are excellent and they do a very good job with all the various golf and country club amenities.

Saw tour groups stopping and talking about it across the street but no info was offered to the actual guests of the hotel, which I thought was odd! Guest services is great and so helpful. Every member of the staff was wonderful. Our room was comfortable and quiet, even though our windows faced Broughton Street.

24 Holiday Gift Ideas for Disney Cruise Travelers

Passionate cruisers have been known to invest significant time or significant money on sites like Etsy to create elaborate personalized magnets. For this reason, my magnets of choice are versions of Magnetic Poetry. It’s a hoot to come back to your room and find cute messages left by other guests. Great choices for cruises in the islands is the Pirate Magnetic Poetry kit or the Beach Magnetic Poetry kit. There is  also a Christmas version and an Edgar Allen Poe version that might be fun if you’re sailing on a Halloween cruise. Just be aware of what words you’re displaying as you put them on your door.

Not everyone feels ill-effects from ocean travel, but even mild seasickness can quickly derail an otherwise lovely vacation. Head trouble off at the pass with motion-sickness remediation such as SeaBands, motion sickness glasses, or good old-fashioned Dramamine. Speak to a medical professional if you have serious concerns about this issue. DCL gives lanyards as a gift to Silver level and higher Castaway Club members. They’re by no means necessary, but some first-time cruisers like to have them on hand. Ship staterooms are small and any noise will inevitably be heard by everyone in the room.

Binoculars can be a great tool for anyone who wants to scan the ocean for other vessels or for wildlife such as whales and dolphins. Binoculars can be particularly useful in sailings in Alaska (to better see glacier features) and the Norwegian fjords where animals are sometimes visible onshore. Most cast members will allow you to slide with a Go-Pro attached to your body with a harness.

A word to the wise — practice closing the case and submerging it in a sink several times filling it with something innocuous like a piece of paper rather than with your expensive gadget. You can increase your storage space by placing some magnetic hooks strategically around your room to hold your day bag, jacket, beach cover-up, or other doo-dads. A Disney Gift Card can be used at the ship’s onboard shops or applied to a stateroom balance. I recommend packing cubes for most travel, but I find them a near imperative for travel on the Disney Wish. The primary stateroom storage on the Wish takes the form of shelves rather than drawers. It’s much easier to keep track of items when they’re contained in a packing cube rather than loose on a shelf.

DCL provides towels on the ship and on its private islands, so you don’t have to bring those with you. A few sets of towel clips or towel bands can help keep your towels in place while you’re off getting another serving of chicken nuggets. Our mission is to help you save time and money on your vacation.

If you need sound to fall asleep, such as a podcast, or even white noise, do everyone a favor and invest headphones that are comfortable enough to wear as you drift into sleepyland. If you can’t sleep with something on your head, a SleepBar can be another helpful option. You should be able to take photos of your underwater snorkeling finds with your phone inside a waterproof case, but I’ve never been able to get good shots through a case’s thick plastic. You’ll have better luck with something like a disposable underwater camera for kids or with a waterproof Go-Pro for adults. Keep everyone’s feet safe while you explore the beach by investing in quality water shoes. Keep all your paperwork in one safe spot with a family passport holder.

Unlike a frenetic Disney theme park vacation, a cruise vacation can be much more focused on relaxation – kicking back with a good book by the pool or on the beach. Since the pandemic, DCL has not carried reading material in its gift shops. With an e-reader like the Kindle, you can bring a complete series of beach-reads with you on vacation with no worries that you’ll run out of books. Make sure to download all your Bridgertons before you embark the ship because onboard WiFi can be expensive. Stateroom doors on Disney Cruise Line are made of metal, which makes them a great surface for displaying magnets.

My favorite is the colossal Stanley mug, but there are numerous other brands and sizes. Waterproof phone cases are inexpensive, but they can be tricky to seal properly.

At Disney, PG13 language is about as racy and you want to get. The sun and wind of ocean travel can be hard on anyone’s skin. While sunscreen is available in the shipboard shops, Coppertone is likely the only brand you’ll find.

Caribbean Cruise Weather Best And Worst Months To Go

best months to cruise caribbean

Aruba is outside of the hurricane belt and doesn’t have a monsoon season. The best time to cruise the Western and Southern Caribbean is winter, as the waters are warm, and the temps are comfortable. Spring is a great time to take an Eastern Caribbean cruise as the cooler waters near the Bahamas heat up.

What Is the Best Time of Year to Go to the Caribbean?

Of course, peak season cruising means higher prices and a winter cruise will cost you more on average than a summer or fall cruise. The cheapest time for a Caribbean cruise is between August and November because school is back in session and the threat of hurricanes and a higher chance of rain. The summer months are significantly less busy because it’s the start of the rainy season. Many people and families take their vacations in the summer because school is out, though Caribbean summer cruises may not be the best choice because of the potential for rain. While you may experience brief rain storms in the afternoons, the rest of the day can be nice and sunny.

When is the Caribbean’s dry season?

The weather is not the only factor as to why these sailings are cheaper-- since most American schools are back in session, the demand for cruising decreases compared to the peak in June and July. Here is a look at what to consider when deciding the ideal month for your cruise vacation. Crop Over is a summer festival in Barbados that celebrates the end of the sugar cane harvest. During July and into early August, expect special markets, parades and celebrations.

Best of all, families can embark on unforgettable journeys together – like ziplining through lush canopies or exploring underwater World War II shipwrecks. Kids will bring home more than just souvenirs, but also lifelong memories of time spent with loved ones. To get the best price on a cruise, it’s generally recommended to book several months to a year in advance. This early booking period allows you to take advantage of early bird discounts and a wider selection of cabins.

Best Time for a Caribbean Cruise

If you’re cruising to ports like Aruba or Bonaire in the Southern Caribbean, you’ll likely experience the warmest conditions, as they’re the closest to the equator. Take advantage of the unique winter climates by jet skiing along one of Aruba’s pristine beaches or strolling through the lush botanical gardens in Martinique. Once you reach July, you are at the very peak of the Caribbean’s wet season, which means you can expect high temperatures, plenty of rain, and humidity levels that can be uncomfortable. During these mid to late summer months, the Caribbean is also at the greatest risk of experiencing tropical storms, multi-day rainfalls, and even hurricanes.

The islands are less crowded too, allowing for a more relaxed and intimate experience. Despite this, the showers are usually short-lived and often occur in the afternoon, making it still possible to enjoy most of the day outdoors. This period also coincides with the hurricane season, with the highest risk of hurricanes from August to October.

If you’re booking a cruise to the Caribbean, you may wonder the best time to visit. Since the Caribbean experiences wet and dry seasons, some months of the year are preferable to others. If you’re spending the time and money to cruise down South, make sure you go when it’s best for you.

For example, many travelers like to avoid cruising from August to early November to avoid the worst of hurricane season. The summer is the Caribbean’s rainy season, which can take away from the experience of those who want to enjoy the sunny blue skies and the beautiful beaches. While spring is part of the Caribbean’s high season, it is one of the best times to visit because the weather is perfect. You have minimal risk of hurricanes and can avoid the rainy season, so you can optimize your time on the yacht deck admiring the view or exploring the various islands.

From casual poolside bites to Pan-Asian flavors at Tamarind and fine dining at Pinnacle Grill, our menus offer a culinary adventure. However, keep in mind that some Southern Caribbean cruise destinations, such as Bonaire, Aruba and Barbados are rarely threatened by hurricanes as these islands are closer to the equator. While it’s mostly true, there are some modest variations in temperature from month to month. Air and water temperatures are noticeably cooler in the northern climates during the winter, which makes a Bahamas cruise less appealing from December through February.

As such, top attractions and activities could mean wildly different things to different people." Ships are filled with stylish, adult-oriented bars promising a hopping scene late into the night as well as hipster venues like a colorful karaoke lounge. Onboard entertainment is inventive and often edgier than what you might see on traditional-style cruises. However, if an upscale cruise experience is what you seek, Windstar Cruises can deliver. The line's seven-night Classic Caribbean itinerary aboard Wind Surf should be on your radar. The bottom line is that the best Caribbean cruise for you depends a lot on your travel style.

However, this also corresponds to the driest season, which is great for outdoor activities. The late summer and fall can reach into the 90s with high humidity and a greater chance of rain. Windstar Cruises offers several tours through the Caribbean during March and April, allowing you to explore your favorite islands or new destinations. With smaller ships, we can stop at smaller ports to bring you to hidden Caribbean gems and avoid the peak season crowds. "Perfect weather" in the Caribbean would likely equate to sunny days with warm water, delightful breezes, and minimal rainfall and humidity. For that kind of weather, Brittney Magner, vice president of luxury travel sales at Royal Travel and a Travel + Leisure A-List Advisor, says January through May is the ideal time to visit.

While the Southern Caribbean maintains its sunny disposition, other destinations welcome refreshing ocean breezes. Occasional light showers are the perfect excuse to head inside and tour the Graycliff Chocolatier, where you can create your own decadent masterpiece with local ingredients like mango and lime. Or sip on an aromatic flight of wines at Bahama Barrels while hearing stories from locals. Then, cruise into clearer conditions and partake in one of the many music festivals that dot the rural roads like the Pure Grenada Music Festival in May or the St. Kitts Music Festival in June. Whether swimming in the crystalline ocean or singing in the refreshing rain, come prepared with a light rain jacket, loose clothing and a heart full of wonder.

Booking last minute will typically be more expensive, so try to book as far in advance as possible. For example, if you can commit to cruise dates a year or more in advance, do it because rates will increase the closer you get to the trip. A good portion of Magner’s clients are visiting the Caribbean for boat charters. "For example, if you go to Anguilla, you can take a boat over to St. Barts. Or you can experience all the little islands around the Dominican Republic or Turks and Caicos."

"Essentially from the time that all the New Year's Eve confetti is swept up until President's [Day]." On the Southern Caribbean Seafarer cruise, couples can visit Curacao, Aruba and Half Moon Cay, the line's private island in the Bahamas. An overnight stay in Curacao allows cruisers to dive deeper into the island's history, culture and natural lures. Aruba offers diversions below and above the water, from submarine tours and snorkeling to hikes and four-wheeling adventures. The stop at pristine Half Moon Cay provides an easy and relaxing beach day.
